Russia's New U.S. Envoy Holds “Very Constructive” Meeting with Trump
(MENAFN) Russia’s recently appointed ambassador to the United States, Aleksandr Darchiev, held a short but “very constructive” meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday after formally submitting his diplomatic credentials at the White House.
The meeting came shortly after Trump’s June 4 phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin—their fourth conversation since Trump returned to office.
“We agreed on the need to restore ties in accordance with the instructions issued by Presidents Putin and Trump during their phone conversation,” Darchiev told RIA Novosti from the Russian Embassy after the meeting.
“I assured the president that, in line with the directives I received, I will do everything possible to help restore Russian-US relations and return them to a state of normalcy and common sense,” he added.
“A window of opportunity has opened to rebuild relations on the basis of mutual trust and equality,” the envoy stated. “Russia and the United States are destined, as great powers, to have a non-confrontational and peaceful coexistence.”
According to Darchiev, discussions between the two nations now include business cooperation and the revival of direct commercial flights. He also told a news outlet earlier that the embassy would push to eliminate what he described as “absurd” constraints on Russian diplomatic operations in the U.S., and to streamline visa processes.
During President Joe Biden’s administration, Washington largely cut off diplomatic engagement with Moscow in 2022, citing the Ukraine war, and imposed wide-ranging sanctions targeting Russian officials and industries. Trump has openly criticized Biden’s approach, accusing him of abandoning diplomacy and vowing to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Although Moscow has welcomed the Trump administration’s shift in tone and its readiness to re-engage, concrete progress remains elusive. While Trump has warned of potential new actions against Russia if a ceasefire is not secured, he has stopped short of supporting a sanctions package currently under debate in the Senate.
